Jesus told a parable about a Pharisee and a tax collector to expose the heart posture God actually honors. The Pharisee did all the right things outwardly but used his prayer as a performance review of himself, comparing himself to others rather than genuinely seeking God. The tax collector, despised by society, simply cried out for mercy with nothing to offer but his honesty. Jesus declared the tax collector justified, not the Pharisee. This challenges us to examine whether we approach God with pride in our own righteousness or with humble dependence on His mercy. Doing the right things externally means little if our hearts are not transformed by Christ. True gratitude and humility before God flow from understanding both His holiness and His goodness. The one who humbles himself will be exalted.
